Feedback

Can you please post who the target audience is and the reearch into CD covers and digi packs - do a presentation or mood board if it is easier.

Your response is sound and you have been creative with your blogs, I particularly like the use of headings with good layout and desigN.  Your postrs require a little more detail to them.

You have a secure knowledge and understanding of who you want your artist to be signed to; perhaps you could link this further by stressing the advantages that your artist has signed to the particular record label.

Digipak Covers

The digipak cover is a way of giving the song and artist an image.
The reason I have picked the ones bellow is because I feel these are similar images to our bands alternative image. I feel these appeal to concert goers and people who are passionate about their music. These also appeal to people who like to select the music they listen as appose to following the crowd and the reason I feel this is because I think these covers are individual and they have something to say about the song/ band.

Institutional Context Of Our Band

Labels: Virgin, Epitaph, Slam Dunk
Virgin is a fairly big music label, i wouldn't say these were major as they are not part of the 'BIG 5', but at the same time they are fairly good companies which pretty good reputations.
the target audience for this band is around 15-21 year olds, people who enjoy music that isn't mainstream, people who enjoy searching to find there own style of music rather than following everyone else's tastes. They are probably people who really appreciate an artists work and the sounds and lyrics that are put together so they would most likely be people that attend concerts so that they can appreciate it.

New Idea

New name: SYNERGY

5 band members

We changed these factors due to the fact that 3s a crowd was already being used for a band and we also needed more members as we needed a bass guitar and there is a second guitar tune to go with the lead guitar.

Ideas For set degisn

We would like an old Victorian Georgian drawing room for the band to play in and also for the dancers to dance in. We have chosen this as wee feel it is different to what is seen in music videos today and it would be a unique selling point for the band.

We would have the ideal location without the furniture inside. The background is the main image that i would like to use for our shoot.

DETAILS: 3 band members, Soft rock/punk pop, alternative independent image
TARGET AUDIENCE: 15-24 boys and girls

OVER ALL CONCEPT: band in old ball room and contemporary dance between a couple showing passion love and anger.
PERFORMANCE & NARRATIVE: Two dancer explain narrative, Bright colours contrasting black and white dance, hurt/upset/pain emotions, promoting band image by making them unique and different exploring dyers ways of creating a star image rather than them being totally themselves but not too eccentric, Three band members (not usual number of band members), Girls love narrative and boys, Lads love the gorgeous girl dancing.

Lyrics broken down

Image of whole band in intro
You've got a lot to say shot of whole band, establishing them andlocation
for the one that walked away.
– close up of lead singer
I give you take, - shot of couple looking into each others eyes
its the way it's always been

Oh how do I know -
Shot of lead singer
if I should stay or just go -
Shot of guitar
the bottom line is this way that I'll never know
Shot of drummer
Stay with me – run and jump passionately
stay with me
– running fingers through hair aggressively
- walking away from each other

You got a lot to say
I give you take – him begging and shouting

some things they never change
–shot of whole band
just change
–lead singer close up

Stay with me
– leap into arms again
stay with me –fighting grabbing her

Never know I could be this way
– girl running from boy- he grabs her
never know that I could walk away – kiss aggressively and passionately
Him smashing a mirror

These things take time to grow
– her crying, makeup down face
it's been said that time heals wounds – cut back to smashing mirror
but no – Him pulling her towards him aggressively, I won't be controlled – shot of singer
and so, this story goes
– whole band shot
Boy and girl gentle walking away turn around

Stay with me
– run at him screaming and crying into his arms
stay with me – kissing passionately

Never know I could be this way
– mid shot of band
never know that I could walk away
– boys walks leaves girl crying in the distance
– close up of lead singer
for the one that pushed me away
–shot of girl packing bags leaving him

Shot of whole band finishing playing

Feedback

You have a creative set of posts on your blog which is good, but pay more attention to presentation and be consistent with this, for example in the layout and use of colour.  The blog is detailed, but appears in two different parts - the theory and your concept.  Would would be better to develop is how the theory can be linked to to your concept - for example, use quotes to explain the points you want to make.  Whn posting the lyrics, try the website lyricsmode.com and you can embed these onto your blog.

Image Ideas

Introduction to advanced portfolio

A promotion package for the release of an album, to include a music promo video, together with two of the following three options:

a website homepage for the band;

a cover for its release as part of a digipak (CD/DVD package);

a magazine advertisement for the digipak (CD/DVD package).

All material for all tasks to be produced by the candidates with the exception of acknowledged non-original sound or image material used in a limited way in video/radio work. Further guidance will be available in the support materials. For music video, permission should be sought from the artist for use of the audio track.

The centre will be expected to allocate marks according to four levels for each of three categories:

Research and Planning

Construction

Evaluation

In arriving at a level for each category, teachers are advised to look for evidence of ‘best fit’. It is possible both for a candidate to be placed in different levels for each of the three categories and to receive quite different marks from other members of the same group responsible for producing an artefact, according to his/her contribution. Teachers are asked to support marks with written comments under the three categories on the assessment sheet.

Initial Idea

  • We would like to experiment with comparisions from black and white to bright colours
  • We would also like to experiment with contrasting old fashioned dancing to contemporary /modern  dance.
  • We would like to use crazy makeup and individual fashion to make our band look unique and stand out from other bands.
  • We would like to focus the contemporary dance of the Narrative so that our video is narrative driven
  • We hope to have 3-5 band members and 1 boy and 1 girl dancing.
  • We would like to set it in a large old mansion.

Idea of couple fighting which we hope to use as inspiration for the contemporary dance we select for out music video to support the narrative .

Song For our music video

You me at six, stay with me
Rock band from surrey
Targeting audiences 15-25

The reason we decided to use this track is because it is very narrative driven which is something the group as a whole wanted to focus on. As this track is versatile we feel we can create something different, which has elements of pure a unique band and video and something that a niche audience would find interesting to watch and listen to.

What is a music video?

"Music Video is not primarily a commodity form but a promotional one"- Andrew Goodwin, 1992

A Music Video consists of :-

  • Labels
  • Majors (BIG 5)
  • Stars
  • Genres
"the music video is a promotional tool"- Negus

Music videos are a promotional link between the audience and the artist which tell a story to do with the song or the star image of the artist pursuing a character.

Music videos "Provide pictures for the songs in our heads. Goodbye imagination... All kids have to do now is watch and listen, stare straight ahead. No need to think and embellish, to create, to imagine. The electric fix is in." - Joe Saltzman

Lady Gaga has a star image made compared to what she used to be. The record label have made her into this she was just an ordinary girl before which follows Richard dyers theory and Negus's Organic ideology of creativity 1.

Before she was simply stephanie

Keith Negus

2 ideologies

The organic ideology of creativity (natural idea)
The synthetic ideology of creativity (man made idea)

The organic ideology of creativity 1

  • Naturalistic
  • Seeds of success needing to be nurtured by record company
  • Image enhanced by record company
  • Time to evolve
The organic ideology of creativity 2

  • emphasis on album = success
  • aimed at older consumers
  • long term strategy= Profits
  • IE ADELE
The synthetic ideology of creativity 1

  • combinatorial approach (artist and material)
  • image is created by record company
  • short time strategy - new combination will be tried out

The synthetic ideology of creativity 2

  • Single sales & successful first album (front loading)
  • younger audiences
  • PROFITS form immediate short term strategy

Richard Dyer

He said...

  • Star is an image, not a real person, that is constructed out of a range of materials
  • Stars are commodities produced and consumed of their strengths and meanings

'Fundamentally the star image is incoherent, that is incomplete and 'open' Dyer says that this is because it is based upon two key paradoxes

 Paradox 1
Star must be ordinary and extra ordinary for the consumer
  • Where they are from
  • School life
  • Good at their talent
Paradox 2
Star must be simultaneously present and absent for consumer
  • Keeps them thinking
  • Makes them hold on to star
